Signs Your AC Needs Maintenance Before Summer

Flagler County’s humid subtropical climate means air conditioners here work harder, longer, than almost anywhere else in the country — and summer heat can arrive well before June. A system that limped through last year without a checkup is a system that’s more likely to fail on the first 90-degree day. Here’s what to watch for.

1. Weak or uneven airflow

If some rooms feel noticeably warmer than others, or vents that used to blow strong now feel weak, it’s often a clogged filter, a failing blower motor, or ductwork losing air along the way.

2. Rising humidity indoors

A healthy AC pulls moisture out of the air as it cools. If your home feels clammy even with the thermostat set low, the system may be short-cycling or losing refrigerant — both worth a technician’s look before peak season.

3. Warm air from the vents

This is usually the first sign homeowners notice, and by the time it shows up, the underlying issue — low refrigerant, a failing compressor — has often been building for a while.

4. Unusual noises or odors

Grinding, squealing, or a musty smell when the system kicks on are all signs worth a professional inspection rather than waiting it out.

5. Climbing energy bills

A system fighting to keep up uses more electricity to do it. If your bill has crept up without a change in habits, a maintenance visit often pays for itself.

6. The system is aging

Coastal Florida’s salt air and constant runtime shorten equipment life. Units past 10–12 years benefit from an annual checkup even with no obvious symptoms — small fixes now are cheaper than a mid-summer replacement.

Pro tip: Schedule maintenance in early spring, before demand for appointments peaks with the season’s first heat wave.
